Certain bits of Wickhambreaux have been around for a very long time! The first record of Wickham was in 948 when Eadred King of the English granted six roods of land to a religious woman named Allfynne. The village also gets a long mention in the Doomsday book (1086). By then it had 2 watermills and 300 sheep. The strange French sounding end to the name of the village probably comes from the time when in 1285 William de Breuse owned the manor. The triangular tree-lined green in front of the Bell House is the centre of the village. This type of village green is also known locally as a Wickham. On the West side of the green is a tall white clap-board mill with a working water wheel located on the Lesser (or Little) Stour. The House opposite the Bell house across the green is Wickhambreaux Court. This was originally the Manor house and behind the early 19th Century façade, there is a very old Tudor building. It is said that in the 12th Century, it was here that Henry II, then a youth of 16, met Rosamund Clifford (the Fair Rosamund). He is supposed to have married her secretly. Later the Manor house belonged to Princess Joan Plantagenet, the original "Fair Maid of Kent" and she visited the village on at least one occasion in 1381. Princess Joan was the Grand-daughter of Edward I, the wife of Edward, The Black Prince, (her second marriage after her first husband died), and the Mother of Richard II. You can see the tomb of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral. The ancient 14th century church includes a beautiful Art Nouveau stained glass window dating from the 19th century, which should not be missed. Also The Bell House has a family history which has been passing on generations since the last 350-400 years. The Bell House is located opposite The Rose Inn, a very nice friendly Pub with good food and kids are welcome in the restaurant area (wise to book on Fridays and Saturdays). They will even bring food over to you at the cottage and take away the washing up if you feel like staying “home”! Summer BBQ’s are very popular. Also around the corner of the house you can find the Bell Bakery if you wish to get some fresh goodies for breakfast. Local Shops can be found at both Littlebourne and Wingham (both have quite long opening hours - Wingham has the biggest stock and is open to 8pm daily). They both sell bread papers milk etc plus a pretty extensive range of the normal small supermarket type stuff. There is a great organic/farm shop which is on the right of the road just before you enter Wingham. You can get all sorts of very good quality stuff from olives, cheese bread and organic joints of meat to locally produced fruit and vegetables. It is a bit pricey but worth it if you want to treat yourself. Nearest supermarkets are in Canterbury: Morrissons (on the Western side of Canterbury), Asda (on the Eastern side of Canterbury) and Sainsbury's, Tesco and M&S in the middle of the city. The kitchen/living area is FULLY stocked and opens onto a small lit patio area. The bathroom on this level houses the washer dryer. There is a double bedroom, bathroom and cupboards located on the first floor. On the second floor is a double bedroom and bathroom in the apexes of the roof. The kitchen/living area has a large 4K Smart TV for your viewing pleasure with Netflix programmed in. Series binge all you like! You know you want too. Both bedrooms have a Smart TV as well. The whole property has Netflix! Yay! Ultra Fast WiFi in entire property. It is actually faster than the WiFi I have at home... All areas have been meticulously dressed to ensure you have a pleasant stay. Property is cleaned when you leave however we can arrange cleaning at intervals for longer stays. We really love the idea of hosting so if there is anything you think is missing then just let us know. We want to ensure you have a great stay. Please just observe the house rules. We are very easy going but will not tolerate any nonsense.
