It occupies the site of the ancient city of “Lato pros Kamara” which was the port of the city “Lato pros Etera”. The latter was a city which flourished during the Archaic and Classical Age as well as during the Roman era. It had its own currency and it is almost certain that the port was the centre of its commercial activity. In particular, “Lato pros Kamara” reached its peak around 800-700 B.C. when it virtually controlled the entire surrounding area. Historical testimonies reveal that the current city of Agios Nikolaos emerged following the fall of the Byzantine Empire (1204) when Crete was sold to the Venetians. However, before the definite arrival of the Venetians, Genovese pirates looted the island. In 1206, Enrico Pescatore built an imposing fortress on top of a hill overlooking the gulf. The fortress was given the name “Mirabello” (Beautiful View) because of its beautiful views over the area. Nowadays, the same name is used to describe the entire province. The fortress was subsequently destroyed by the Ottomans. The port of Agios Nikolaos maintained its significance following the end of the Venetian occupation. The town kept on thriving using its port as a lever for growth which paved the way for its tourism development. In the early 1960’s, “Minos Beach”, the first luxury hotel of the area, was built near the city centre marking the beginning of the first tourism development. It is worth noting that Agios Nikolaos was the first area of Crete to experience tourism development years before the western part of the island. You can easily walk to a close by beach or tavernas - these things are within 1800 meters walking distance. I would recommend you though to have a car so you can enjoy also day trips in nearby places such as mochlos which worths to be visited.

Our family have decided to welcome you into our lovely house beside the sea. The house is located opposite the main beach of Elounda and is on the road which leads to Plaka village. You will also be pleased to find lots of English and German books, a high-speed internet connection, air conditioning and fresh Cretan product that will be waiting for you in the house to make your stay relaxing and memorable. Fresh bath towels and bed linens, tips about Crete, and a free city guide with the hip spots of the town are provided so that you feel like a local. During your stay we will assist you any time needed. Downstairs we have our family-owned supermarket and snack bar, "Mylos" and in case you get hungry and tired of cooking, you can enjoy our home-cooked food from our restaurant downstairs delivered to your house! Vathi is located 10km south of Agios Nikolaos, in the area of Kritsa, just before the beaches of Istron. It is generally unknown beach, just because it ... did not exist before 2010, as it is artificial! It is also not seen from the old road that links Agios Nikolaos with Eastern Crete. The beach is artificial and is formed in a narrow bay, which is very well protected from the winds. Only easterly winds could affect the area, but they are very rare in Crete. The beach has fine whitish sand, making the colors of the sea stunning. It is very well organized, because it is operated by the luxurious local hotel Daios Cove. To get to the beach, if you don't stay in the hotel, you should walk down a concrete pathway with staircases. In order to find the path, turn left just before the hotel entrance and follow the road to the houses outside the resort, till you find a narrow street leading to the staircases. Vathi is ideal for families as there is no wave. You could also explore the rocky shores of the Gulf with your snorkeler’s mask. You can easily walk to the beach as it is just 50 meters walking distance. To get to tavernas, cafes, supermarkets a car is highly recommended. The town of Agios Nikolaos is within 7 minutes driving distance while istron is about 4 minutes driving distance. Please note that the outdoor pool is heated and can reach 6 to 8 degrees more that the air temperature with maximum value of 29°C
