MAYUDAMA HOUSE is a renovated old-Japanese art house, which has 134 years of history. The house was used to raise silkworms to produce silk, was once a silk mill back in 19 century. It is surrounded by the vast nature and many hot springs such as Kusatsu, It has become a model of "Spirited Away", a notable Japanese animation directed by Hayao Miyazaki. If you're a little tired from the bustle of the city, enjoy your stay at #MAYUDAMAHOUSE ! 【1F】 On the first floor, there is the original wisdom of life that was built, such as the hearth (IRORI) It was an essential appliance for the old life. Especially grilled fish and pot in the hearth are the best choice. Let’s smoke out! 【2F】 On the second floor, the south side is all glazed and you can enjoy the best view. 【Facilities】 On the first floor, there are 3 Tatami rooms for your living space, fireplace, kitchen, restroom, and bath. The second floor is an open space for your relaxation. There are projector and audio sets. No worries about the toilet! We have modern western one so everyone could use. We have dishes, cookware, seasoning and flavouring, all free to use. We also have BBQ sets. NOTE: We do not serve foods for our guests. If you are not planning to go out for dinner, we recommend you to prepare ingredients at the grocery store before the stay. 【Activity introduction】 · Wild vegetable searching searching for wild plants in the satoyama around the old private house, tempura as it is ➡ 500 yen/person (from April to early June only) · Experience making konjac (a Japanese traditional side dish) making potatoes of Gunma. ➡ 700 yen/person (from October to March only) · Handmade udon making using local pollen ➡ 500 yen/person (Current reception is suspended) You can experience the country life where nature, clothing and shelter, which is only possible in the country, is tied deeply. * Depending on the time and schedule of local people, we may not meet your expectations. On the way, it is a steep slope, so you might take about 10 minutes to hike up. However, on the way back, it will only take you about 5 minutes! MAYUDAMA HOUSE is a renovated old-Japanese art house with 134 years of history. Built in the late Edo period, when the Shogunate was reigning, this house was used as a silk mill in the 19th century. Surrounded by lush nature, the house nests in a region with deep forests and hot springs. One of the nearby hot springs is Kusatsu which is one of the most famous in Japan, where the Shogun came to rest, and became a model for the ghibli film “Spirited Away”. The fireplace (IRORI) was the center of life in the old days and you can still use it for cooking. We recommend grilling fish over the fire or cooking a Japanese hot pot in this fireplace as it is the classic dish to cook in an Irori. 【2F】 On the second floor, the South side is all renovated to have a wide view of the mountains.
