Mestia is a very old town with historic medieval houses, churches and towers. It is surrounded by snow-top mountains and is a heaven for trekking, sight-seeing and mountain skiing. Plenty of one-day hikes and car-trips to lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, panoramic viewpoints and historic sites. You can also use Mestia as the starting and finishing point for a long hike in the mountains of Svaneti. Trails are marked and mapped and you can get all the information through Mari or in the Tourist Information Centre. You can also hire a local guide or an experienced driver with a 4WD car. In the winter the ski-resort opens and you can enjoy a variety of ski trails (for beginners, experienced skiers and experts), equipped with ropeways, cafes, ski-equipment rental points. A fascinating feature of Mesia are the ancient Svan houses, churches and towers - 8-14 century, of traditional architecture, that give the town its unique image. Some of the churches are decorated with amazing frescoes. There is a fantastic museum of folk art in Mestia with an awesome collection of locally found gold and silver, ikons, jewellery, etc. There is also an ethnographic museum featuring the interiors of a traditional Svan house with authentic household items. .The bus stop is 100 meters from the house. Mari speaks Georgian and English fluently, cooks fantastic home meals and has a gift for loving people and making them feel at home. the fruit garden was planted by Mari' great-grandmother. The 6 guest rooms and 4 bathrooms are on the second floor and there is a separate entrance into that part of the house.2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms are on the first floor. You can see the mountains and the garden from the windows. There is a big dining room downstairs, with a wood stove that is kept burning with pine-tree logs all year round because it's so fragrant and cosy. You can use the kitchen to cook for yourself if you like, it is equipped with all modern conveniences (electric stove, fridge, microwave, electric kettle) but normally the guests enjoy the ample breakfasts and dinners that Mari and her mother serve them. MARI taught cooking from her mother who is brilliant at cooking and she is famous for its traditional delicious dishes. and if you like, she can share traditional Georgian recipes with you! She keeps her own vegetable and fruit garden, chickens and cows, so the food is all organic and fresh. Home-grown vegetables and home-made Khacahpuri, Bread,Jams, preserves, nuts and honey, fresh eggs, butter, yoghurt and milk for breakfast - a good start for a day full of adventures!
